How to make Healthy Khichda|One pot Khichda by Izyan's Kitchen

Khichda is made up of meat, lentils,  rice and spices... It is a yummy and healthy dish.  One must taste the goodness of lentils in this khichda. And it is easy to make in one pot.


Today we gonna see how to make khichda with step by step pictures. Kitchda is served with fried onions on top of it. Even kids love to eat this khichda, the mixed flavours of lentils, rice, spices and meat will push them to eat

Health benefits of lentils , have a short look over it- lentils are low in calories , rich in iron and have an excellent source of protein. It keeps your heart healthy and regulates blood sugar level

Today's recipe is chicken khichda, you can also substitute it with mutton or beef too.

INGREDIENTS FOR KHICHDA (measuring cup 150 ml)

  • 1 Onion, thinly sliced
  • 150 gm boneless chicken (small cubes)
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tomato, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup red lentil
  • 1/2 cup yellow moong dal
  • 1/2 cup Toor Dal
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 cup coriander leaves
  • 1 cup mint leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 750 ml of water

For Garnishing

  • 1 fried onion



How to make Chicken Khichda

1. Wash  lentils and rice and then soak it in water for about 30 mins

2. In a cooker heat oil

3. Add sliced onion and saute till it turns a light pink colour

4. Add boneless chicken and saute it well

5. Add ginger garlic paste and salt and saute it for 2 mins

6. Add tomato and saute till it gets mushy

7. Then add on the red chilli powder and garam masala

8. Mix it well

9. Add coriander and mint leaves 

10. Saute for another 1 min

11. Then add adequate water( here I have added 750 ml of water)

12. When the water starts boiling add soaked lentils and rice mix it once and close the lid and pressure cook for about 10 mins. 

13. Open the lid mix it well and serve hot with fried onions


     Tips & serving suggestion for                                  khichda 

  • Using a pressure cooker can make it easy 

  • Can use green chillies if u like and adjust the quantity of red chilli powder according to it

  • Before serving check whether it is fully cooked. It doesn't taste good if the rice and lentils are not mushy 

  • It should not be thicker and it should not be more watery the consistency must be perfect 

  • Serve hot with fried onions

  • U can add ghee( clarified butter) on top of it to increase its flavour

  • Can serve with  mint chutney


HOW TO MAKE KHICHDA STEP BY STEP WITH PICTURES




To make khichda first soak lentils or dals and rice in water for about 30 mins


     In a pressure cooker heat some oil


                       Add sliced onion 


 saute till it turns a light pink colour



Put small pieces of boneless chicken and saute for some time


Add ginger garlic paste and salt and saute till the raw smell disappear


Add tomato and cook till it gets mushy


            Add on the red chilli powder 


Then add garam masala and mix it well


Then add coriander leaves and mint leaves and saute it


Add adequate water ( here I have added 750 ml of water)


When water comes to boil add soaked lentils and rice


Close the lid and pressure cook for about 10 mins. If it is not cooked fully  give few more whistle 


           Serve hot with fried onions
